Longtime Birmingham resident James E. Meyer, age 88, passed away on February 22, 2015 after a lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his wife Eva Meyer and his son Wesley Meyer. Jim was a member of Woodlawn Methodist Church. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. Jim, fondly known as "Jitters" by his co-workers and friends, was a 40 year veteran of the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Longtime Birmingham resident James E. Meyer, age 88, passed away on February 22, 2015 after a lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his wife Eva Meyer and his son Wesley Meyer. Jim was a member of Woodlawn Methodist Church. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. Jim, fondly known as "Jitters" by his co-workers and friends, was a 40 year veteran of the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. He began his career as a Fire Inspector, later spent a short time at Station 22 on Clairmont Ave and then was reassigned to Station 15 in West End where he worked the remainder of his career. He was a member of the Birmingham Retired Firefighters Association. He and his wife were very fond of boating and spent as much time as possible at their lake house on Logan Martin Lake. Jim leaves behind many friends, particularly his special friend Alene Mathis and her family of Pell City. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Meyer will be a graveside service on Thursday, April 2. 2015, at 2:00 at Elmwood Cemetery.
