Martha Merchant Chastaine, age 80, died on January 29, 2018 in Hoover, Al at the home of her daughter, Leigh Ann Thrash. She was surrounded by her family.
Martha Dean Black was born on June 23, 1937 to Carlos and Mattie Black and was the youngest of six children. She worked over 20 years for the Small Business Administration. She was a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church for 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kelcy Ray Merchant; her husband, Robert Reid Chastaine; brothers, sisters and grandson, Joseph.

She is survived by her children, Ken Merchant (Beth), Kathy Phelps (Joe), David Merchant (Dana) and Leigh Ann Thrash (Kent); 12 grandchildren, Jason Caldwell, Stephen Merchant, Amy Meyer, Courtney Lawrence, Jennifer Watson, Meredith Hoover, Kelsey Richards, Drew Merchant, Matthew Phelps, Bailey Thrash, Morgan Williams, and Griffin Thrash; 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Family will receive friends Wednesday January 31, 2018 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at Hunter Street Baptist Church with a celebration of Martha's life to follow at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers: Jason Caldwell, Stephen Merchant, Griffin Thrash, Matt Watson, Brodey Caldwell and Mason Townley.
She will be remembered as a wonderful Christian lady dedicated to her family.
Her children would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Regency Retirement Village, Birmingham, AL for their attentiveness and loving care.
Memorials may be made in Martha's memory to Alzheimer's Disease Research.
